Gene Editing Bananas to Fight Against Fungus
The Colombian government declared a national emergency in August, after discovering the dangerous banana wilt disease had infected the nation’s trees. This disease has the potential to destroy the country’s banana trees.
Scientists are now using gene editing, a new plant breeding method, to make small changes to the banana’s genetic code, in an effort to develop a disease-resistant variety. One promising variety, developed in Australia, seems to be “almost immune” to banana wilt.
